How to Start and Break Your Fast During Ramadan

Starting the Fast (Suhoor & Fajr Prayer)

The fast begins before dawn with a pre-dawn meal called Suhoor (Sehri). It is highly recommended as it provides energy for the day ahead.

Steps to Start the Fast
1. Eat Suhoor: Preferably before Fajr (dawn), as close to the time of Fajr as possible.
2. Make the Intention (Niyyah):

  • While the intention is made in the heart, you may say:
“Nawaitu sauma ghadin ‘an ada’i fardhi Ramadan hadhihi as-sanati lillahi ta’ala.”
(I intend to fast tomorrow for the month of Ramadan, in fulfillment of the obligation, for the sake of Allah, the Most High.)

3. Fajr Prayer: After Suhoor, perform the Fajr prayer to officially begin your fast.

Breaking the Fast (Iftar & Maghrib Prayer)

The fast is broken at Maghrib (sunset) with a meal called Iftar.

Steps to Break the Fast
1. Break the Fast with Dates & Water (as per the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ). If dates are unavailable, drink water first.
2. Recite the Iftar Dua:

  • Before eating, say
“Allahumma inni laka sumtu wa bika aamantu wa ‘alayka tawakkaltu wa ‘ala rizq-ika-aftartu.”
(O Allah, I have fasted for You, I believe in You, I trust in You, and I break my fast with Your sustenance.)
  • Alternatively, another common dua is:
    “Dhahabadh-dhama’u wabtallatil-‘urooqu wa thabatal-ajru insha’Allah.”
(The thirst has gone, the veins are moistened, and the reward is confirmed, if Allah wills.)

3. Eat Iftar: Start with dates and water, then have a balanced meal.

4. Pray Maghrib: Perform the Maghrib prayer after breaking your fast.
